Cross-Country Skiing
For a workout with no rival try cross-country skiing. Steamboat is host to several cross-country ski facilities, from the private Steamboat Ski Touring Center to the public Howelson Hill Nordic Center. There are also well-marked trails on Rabbit Ears Pass and Buffalo Pass.
The Steamboat Ski Touring Center maintains over 13km of cross-country and snowshoe trails near the Steamboat Ski Area around Fish Creek. There are trails for all styles and ability levels, from classic to skate skiing, and from beginner to advanced. The Ski Touring Center has a complete rental and Nordic ski shop as well as a snack bar.
The Howelsen Nordic Center has about 20km of classic, skate skiing and snowshoe trails, all maintained by the city for public use. There is no fee to use the facility, but donations for grooming expenditures are welcome.
For a more scenic and solitary experience try the Vista Verde Nordic Center or the Steamboat Lake State Park Touring Center. Both of these facilities are located north of Steamboat.
